Why maintain a personal blog when there’s Twitter?
I’m not being snarky or declaring that this blog is useless (ok, maybe a little…but I have good reasons for keeping this blog…where else am I going to post photos of penis-dinosaur cookies?). But with technology prodding and fueling our latent ADHD, I admit that I’m having problems reading long personal blog entries. Is it just me? If the point of reading someone’s personal blog is to learn more about the author, wouldn’t readers get a more realistic view of the author’s life by following tweets instead?
Just curious.
I’m in the exact same boat. I’ve barely updated my blog in the past few months where I’ve taken to updating my Twitter pretty seriously.
One thing you could do have Twitter publish directly to your Wordpress as well with its own individual blog entries, but that seems like it defeats the point.
Yeah, I feel like I’m breaking some untold internet etiquette when I link my blog entries via Twitter. Feels a bit like dirty pimping, especially when automated!
For the same reason I would read full reviews of games in addition to the 90-word EGM nuggets — some thoughts deserve more than a terse sentence or two. The idea that every concept or expression can be boiled down to 140 characters kind of offends me. Twitter is fine for “what,” but more detailed writing is necessary for “why.”
Oh my god Jeremy, that response was so deliciously *you*. I love it.
Yeah I kind of agree, I blame my goldfish like attention span. 140 characters or my eyes glaze over only to be caught by the sight of something shiny!
I agree. Given that you can even recieve these updates via handsets, it has actually become more convenient and a better way to recieve news or connect with the people you follow. Of course the people you follow being the celebrities and editors we’ve come to idolize but the internet is an amazing thing. Kudos to Jeremy for also bringing up a good point.
Jeremy already said it much better than I could. Personally I like reading blogs for the pictures.
I just realized that AIM away messages are my Twitter substitute. My computer is on pretty much 24/7 and I always have an away message on AIM that I change every few hours. People have realized by now that they can IM me even when I’m “away” =P
Twitter vs. Blog is situation based for me. If I have the time, I’d much prefer to sit down and read a blog entry, whereas twitter is something fun to read while I’m out and about.
Really, this just relates back to what Jeremy said. When I’m relaxed and have the time, reading something with more substance is great whereas when I’m on the go time to think is usually limited or I’m otherwise distracted.
Both area great, when used appropriately.
Well with blogs you can post amazing stuff like the wine recipe and post up those super cool wrapping presents pics (seriously awsum) not too even mention the penisaurus, with twitter its a 140 word count, not much more then a couple of sentences, a quickie is always fun but always much nicer when you get more. pictures are pretty awesome too.
I feel exactly the opposite, and I mean no offense when I say this: I can’t help feeling that Twitter caters primarily towards attention whores who believe people will actually be interested in what they’re doing every second of the day.
Just give us the highlights in a well-written blog post please.
It seems that 99% of the world would disagree with me though.
I’m with Jeremy and Aidan. Eff Twitter…btw you can stalk me@twitter.com/carl2000lbs
The simple fact that you have a million commenters on this blog means you should keep it.
Also twitter? I give 2 more years, tops.
Finally, tweets are boring.
It’s funny. Twitter is pulling you away from blogging, but it’s doing the reverse for me.
I never thought I had time for a blog—Twitter seemed the perfect alternative—but now I’m finding that certain thoughts need more than 140 characters.
